Westview Community Organization

Tonight’s meeting was informative, here’s a quick recap. Please add  events to your calendar:

  1. June 21st Westview Neighborhood BBQ, partnership with It’s Our Neighborhood Association
  2. National Night Out 2008 (First Tuesday in August)
  3. Great American Clean-Up

Also Major Perdue, Deputy Chief of Zone 4 came out and gave a report on crime in our area. As you know, Zone 4 is the LARGEST zone, and is in need of additional Officers- our territory is wide- covering West End, Westview, Dill/University Ave , Oakland City all the way to parts of Camp Creek .   Crime is up 15% more this year from last- he did emphasize that WE- Westview and West End are not unique- Atlanta and the nationhas huge CRIME issues due to the bad economy.   Major Perdue also reiterated that most crime is on vacant properties. Copper. Appliances. Electrical.  HVAC/Furnace (for copper) etc.  Also a new trend, businesses are being hit after hours.   Our defence/solution; US.  He advised us to become those “nosey neighbors” again, take notes, CALL the police, know your neighbors, look out for each other.  There is also a new Seniors Police Academy training – contact Macia Kimbro at 404-209-5250 to sign up.

Jonathan Kidwell (Area Manager for NPU-T) of House Proud (a ToolBank Program) also informed the residents of this program/service now available to our Seniors in NPU-T. You WANT TO KNOW ABOUT THIS PROGRAM. If you are a Senior Citizen (Home Owner) or know someone who is, that reside in NPU-T you House Proud will help restore your home.  Some of the FREE services they offer is roof repair, electrical, plumbing, painting, flooring- anything to keep you “warm, safe and dry” .  Check out their website at www.houseproudatl.org  and contact Jonathan at 404-880-0054x 20, email jon@toolbank.org.  This service is for Seniors 60+, home owners, lower income ( income of $39,000max a year for single), and MUST have home owners insurance. Be sure to help your neighbors and get them this information.

Lastly, did you know that Habitat for Humanity has a ReStore?  This is a home improvement outlet (store selling products up to 75% below retail) and 100% of the profit supports Atlanta Habitat for Humanity. All of the products are donated,(some from Home Depot ). The store is in Grant Park. 519 Memorial Drive, www.atlantarestore.orgor call for hours at 404-525-2114. Be sure to mention you heard about this from “Ayanna” at the Westview Community meeting for a 25% discount off a single item purchase.  You can also donate (for a tax right off) or volunteer.

…and I think, that’s it.  Tomorrow West End Neighborhood Development at 7PM at the Peeples Street library.
