A Must See!!!
Dear Beloved Community:
Have I got something to tell you! It’s big and it’s brand new. Now at the corner of the intersection of Whitehall and Metropolitan Streets, just blocks from the AUC and across the street from Nicky’s Seafood is a billboard size mural. Georgia Power commissioned the work of art to enhance its utility substation site. The chosen artist Dwayne Wright aka Dubelyoo has created a concept, representing 6 historical neighborhoods, using paint and stencil on 5 concrete panels. See it for yourself.
This project is (no pun intended) off the wall! It stands as a pictorial cornerstone of neighborhoods at the crossroads. The ‘bigger than life’ portraits speak to the inner strength of values etched in individuals and the power of community building. Let’s view this mural as a monument to the testament of our reliance on awareness of the past, faith in what we are capable of and the possibilities for the future.
Georgia Power, represented by Lolita Browning, in association with Matt Sussman of Tunnell &Tunnell Landscape Architecture and significant members of the Mechanicsville/Pittsburg, Adair Park, Castleberry Hill, West End and AUC community and institutions deserve ginormous props for their dedication and investment to this work of art. *Photos courtesy of the artist.
Job well done,
Wanda Whiteside,
AUCNA president and
member of the artist selection committee
